Maintenance
of Good HealthWe aim to keep your pets in good health and enable them to enjoy a good quality of life for as long as possible. It is our usual procedure to conduct a health check at the same time as the annual booster vaccinations. This often enables us to advise you of any actual or impending health problems. It is also a good time for you to collect and bring in a fresh urine sample which can be used to screen older cats and dogs for underlying disease processes that may not be outwardly apparent.
Our trained pet health counsellor is on hand for those times when you feel that your pet is generally in good health, but would benefit from advice on other aspects of pet care. These include : worming, fleas, dental hygene and diet. Our slimming clinics have been particularly successful. If any underlying problems are picked up at this time, your pet will be referred to the veterinary surgeon.
We occassionally hold puppy parties. These can be informative for you, offer an opportunity to socialise your puppy and are lots of fun.
It is essential that all cats and dogs are regularly wormed. Apart from being harmful to your pet, some species of worms are a hazard to human health, particularly children. We will give you a worming program and supply the most up to date and effective treatments. these for the most part cannot be obtained in shops.
Fleas have now become a year round problem. This is probably due to warmer winters and centrally heated homes with wall to wall carpeting. Fleas are implicated in over 90% of skin problems, especially the allergic cases. We stock a wide range of modern effective treatments for both pets and premises which are only available in veterinary practices.
Many of todays pet ailments are caused by incorrect feeding. This often results in obesity, leading to arthritis, heart disease, Diabetes etc. A good balanced diet is the best way to ensure your pet's health. Our nursing staff are trained to give advice on which particular diet would best suit your pet. Your veterinary surgeon may advise a special medical prescription diet when treating a particular ailment such as Liver, Kidney, Heart Disease etc.
Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most common conditions seen by veterinary surgeons. Plaque and tartar harbour bacteria and can build up on teeth. These bacteria spread through the bloodstream to affect the kidneys, heart and liver. We can check pets' teeth and when necessary arrange for you to have your pet's teeth descaled and polished. We organise regular "Dental evenings" to demonstrate how you can care for your pet's teeth by brushing with special toothpaste and using special chews, toys and diets. Remember that bad breath is not normal. The associated infection will usually cause discomfort and affect your pet's health.
